In Singapore, it’s never been easy to own or maintain a car. For those who are unaware, cars are some of the priciest investments you can make. This is because vehicle ownership is discouraged in our country, and the costs of vehicle ownership aren’t cheap. Not only do you have to pay for the vehicle cost itself, but you also have to mind other costs such as taxes, registration fees, certifications, and much more. And when you need to maintain your vehicle, you also need to find the proper engine components for it. But where can you get cheap parts that won’t break the bank?

Aftermarket parts: are they the better choice?

Sooner or later, you’re going to need to replace the parts of your vehicle. But should you get OEM or aftermarket parts? For example, what if you need to replace your engine?

OEM or Original Equipment Manufacturer components are parts made by the same manufacturer of the vehicle, while aftermarket engine components are those that are made by an outside company.

Should you settle for an aftermarket filter ,or should you stick to the original? There are certain considerations you have to make, such as:

Cost

Aftermarket automotive parts tend to be more affordable than OEM parts. In some cases, like minor repairs, using these parts may be preferable to more expensive ones.

Insurance coverage

In more serious cases, you may need to give major repairs to cars (i.e. after collisions or accidents). In this case, you may want to check your documents to see if you’re entitled to repairs. Many insurance companies may void or alter your agreement if you do not use OEM parts.

Availability.

Want an aftermarket air filter or other spare parts? You may just find it at your local gas station or auto repair shop, whereas you need to go to an authorised dealer for OEM parts.
