Singapore indeed is one of the richest nations in the region. There might not be an official Singapore poverty line, but don’t be fooled. With rising living prices and a growing population, the country’s competitive environment makes it difficult for many families to get what they need.
Singapore ranks second in income disparity in Asia. According to the government, over 100,000 families are living in urban poverty. This equates to around 1 in 10 households or roughly over 300,000 people. Unfortunately, it doesn’t affect all groups equally. Some are more adversely affected by poverty and its related effects than others.
Who are these groups of people that we should pay attention to?
- Foreign nationals and foreign workers.
Each year, thousands of people from different countries go to Singapore to fill important roles in our society. People like domestic workers, caregivers, retail workers, and more are indispensable parts of our community, but they can be affected by poverty harder because of their limited rights compared to citizens.
- The elderly.
The elderly have made positive contributions to our society at their prime, but now, they’re part of the vulnerable groups in the community. Physical disabilities and retirement from work make them dependent on our health.
- People with disabilities.
In the same vein as the elderly, people with either mental or physical disabilities should be respected and assisted. Our current socio-political landscape makes it difficult for them to obtain this.
- Households with single parents or lone breadwinners.
With Singapore’s rising living costs, even households with two working parents have difficulties keeping up with costs. What more with families that have a sole breadwinner?
